On June 20, 2021, another GPS rollover took place. This can have major consequences for your onboard GPS. We would like to tell you more about this in this mailing.

What is a GPS rollover?

We also speak of a 'GPS week number rollover'. A GPS system has its own GPS time that is expressed in weeks. After 1024 weeks, this counter of the GPS is reset to zero.

How will this affect me?

Due to this GPS rollover, the time of your GPS device may no longer be correct, but may be 19.7 years in the past. This may cause your GPS device to malfunction. It is also possible that the device itself functions properly, but can no longer send the correct data to external software, such as WinGPS. As a result, your position may not be correct, the GRIB files may not be downloaded for the correct date and the data of the currents and tides may not be visible.

We recommend that you always test your GPS system before you travel. This way you will not be faced with surprises while sailing.

What is the solution?

On some GPS devices it is possible to perform an update, so that you have the correct GPS time again. Unfortunately, this is not the case for the (older) commonly used Furuno on-board GPS, for example. See Furuno's message about this here.

In this case you will need a new GPS for on board. For navigation on the laptop, we recommend the popular USB GPS receiver 'BU353s4'.For a good GPS position, a GPS receiver must see at least half of the sky. We therefore recommend the USB GPS receiver 'MR-350' for metal ships. This is because of the longer cable (4.5 meters) and the possibility to mount it with the supplied screws.

Are you already familiar with our apps for iPhone and iPad? We are happy to tell you more about this and the latest developments in this mailing. For example, the waterway network will be added soon, with which you can better navigate over inland waterways!

Meet WinGPS for iPad and iPhone

Sail with the free app 'WinGPS Marine', or choose the more extensive navigation app 'WinGPS Marine Plus'. Ideal for navigation on board your sloop, sailing yacht, motor vessel or canoe.

The charts you can use in these apps are Stentec's own DKW charts. For example, the free DKW Vaarkaart Frisian Lakes or the well-known DKW 1800 series (2018 edition and newer), including weekly update service.
Connect your AIS via WiFi with WinGPS Marine +

Unlock premium features with WinGPS Marine Plus

With the WinGPS Marine Plus app it is already possible to plot (simple) routes and keep track of your sailed routes. For inland waterways you can put the app in course-up mode.
Connect your AIS device wirelessly via WiFi to your iPhone or iPad, so that you can see the AIS objects on the chart and have a better view of the traffic situation.

Stay informed of all developments around our apps for your iPad and iPhone

We are currently working on adding the waterway network to WinGPS Marine for your iPad and iPhone. This is already available in the free app Vaarkaart Friese Meren.
WinGPS Marine is already ideal for use with our open water charts, such as the popular DKW 1800 series. After adding the waterway network, the app will also be suitable for navigation on inland waterways, such as with the DKW Vaarkaart Nederland.

The current and tide information and the ability to download GRIB files, for example to show wind and precipitation on the chart, are also expected for WinGPS Marine Plus.

Check the latest developments on this new page about our apps for iOS:

Our other apps for iOS and Android

In addition to WinGPS Marine for iOS, there is also WinGPS Marine for Android devices. Visit www.wingpsmarine.com for more information.

We have developed the free app 'Vaarkaart Friese Meren’ especially for our own area. It is now also available for iOS! Ideal for trying out navigating on a tablet or smartphone. Visit www.vaarkaartfriesemeren.nl for more information.

Bluetooth GPS Receiver

If your iPad does not have an option for mobile internet, it also does not have an internal GPS receiver. If you want to use this iPad for navigation on board, an external GPS receiver is necessary to determine your position.

The GNS 3000 is a Bluetooth GPS receiver and is ideal for navigation with WinGPS Marine on your iPad.

Are you sailing in the Dutch province North Holland? WinGPS 5 can now send operation requests automatically to more than 50 bridges and locks in the province of North Holland. This way the bridges and locks can be operated efficiently and allows you to sail along on the blue wave.  A better flow on both road and water will be realized.

Blue wave

Sailing on the Blue Wave, just like the Green Wave on the road, but on the water. This shortens the waiting time at the bridge or locks and reduces fuel consumption. In other words, lower costs for you and we all save the environment.

Because the bridge does not have to be opened as often, this improves traffic flow and improves accessibility on both the road and the water.

How does the bridge management system (BMS) work?

You click on the BMS button on the toolbar in WinGPS 5 - 2021 (Navigator, Pro, Voyager or Inland) and fill in the requested data. On the chart in WinGPS you can immediately see which bridges participate in the BMS; these have a black or green circle.

Tip: To use BMS you need a working internet connection on your laptop. For example via a hotspot on your smartphone.

When you approach a bridge/lock while sailing, you are automatically registered. A message is sent to the bridge/lock keeper so that they know you are coming, including the ETA. Together with the information about the traffic on the road, public transport and the emergency services, the bridge/lock keeper can determine the best operating time.

In this way, the passage through the bridge or lock is used as efficiently as possible and it needs to be operated less often.

Important bridges and locks in the Netherlands are connected to the BLIS (Blauwe Golf Verbindend) of Rijkswaterstaat.

In WinGPS 5 you can see the expected opening time, distance and recommended sailing speed when you approach a BLIS bridge or lock at Routes > Routeplanner Info. This allows you to adjust your sailing speed and thus save fuel and emit less CO2/NO2.

BLIS is not only available for North Holland, but for the whole of the Netherlands. Being able to see the expected opening time, distance and recommended sailing speed is only available in North Holland. It is our intention to make this available throughout the Netherlands in WinGPS 5. Keep an eye on our news items for more information about this.

In development: Route network in our apps for iOS

Good news for water sports enthusiasts with an iPad or iPhone. Our developers are currently implementing the route network in our apps for iOS. This allows you to view the depth information from the route network in due course and add a navigation waypoint to the route network. This way you can easily and quickly set out a 1-point route on the inland waterways.

After this update, more extensive information about bridges and locks will be added and the planning of routes will be further expanded.
