WinGPS Pro and other software for long sailing trips
At the beginning of summer 2002 we would like to give you an overview of software that might be important for offshore sailing trips and for world travellers. More info and downloads (demo's and evaluation versions): www.stentec.com.
WinGPS Pro 3.2
For GPS-navigation with notebook and GPS the best sold product is our new WinGPS Pro 3.2. This software works optimal with our Dutch DKW1800 charts (+ BaZ Update Service), but also reads Maptech BSB charts. Selection of world-wide digital charts is easy in our online shop.
WinGPS Pro is optimized for scanning paper Mercator charts if CD's are not available. Some sailors even use scanners on-board. You can use 3 point calibration for other charts projections. WinGPS Pro runs on most Windows versions (including XP).
NavMaster 5 and WinChart Pro Plus
If you are looking for good vector charting Stentec distributes NavMaster 5 (C-map, ARCS, S57) and WinChart Pro Plus (C-map) software. Software and charts are both more expensive than WinGPS Pro.
Connecting GPS to your notebook
GPS to your notebook connection is easy with the serial cable or USB to Serial interface cable. WinGPS Pro also controls and reads other NMEA instruments like an autopilot or wind meter. Connection is easy to USB or serial (Com) port of your notebook using the new MiniPlex-41 NMEA-multiplexer.
Matching the voltage of your notebook to your board system can be done using a DC/AC convertor or power booster from www.proostenelectronics.com. Some notebooks can be connected directly to a low voltage board system.
Passage Planning
For passage planning the new Visual Passage Planner 2 is an absolute must for world travelers. Besides route planning and optimization you even can connect a GPS, which seems perfect to me on the ocean. Near land it's of course better to use WinGPS pro and more detailed navigation charts.
Also very interesting is a training program with almost the same name Virtual Passages 2. This simulator includes a 5 years global daily weather data set including winds, clouds, pressure and currents. Explore the detailed weather conditions and learn how to avoid calms, storms, and cyclones.
Receiving Actual Weather
Actual weather data can be received using a SSB radio and Mscan Meteo Pro or Fax. The Pro version also includes NAVTEX and RTTY. Just connect the speaker output of the SSB receiver to the sound card of your computer.
