SS5 - to improve

General question for Sail Simulator (raising sails, pulling sheets, etc.)

SS5 - to improve

Postby Marxx » Thu 29 Jan 2009 - 10:56

The scope of that topic is not the wish list - it's rather opinion on what is currently implemented in order to list areas for potential improve.
Not to forget - the list of small findings from SS5 pre-release (version Jan 2009)

1. Sounds - terrible. The sounds on Valk on the small wave are more similair to freaky high rpm engine than sailing. I was trying to replace default sounds but probably not all is placed in .wav format. As far as sail sounds are lovely the interaction of hull and water is something to be improoved.

2. Race mode in Multiplayer - falstart track. This is valid if intention of developers is to have match and fleet with current version. As proper start is notified (line goes from red to green) it looks like that I can cross start line before without any indication. For match race it will be ok but with a fleet it could cause the problems and misunderstandings.

3. Match race - as I understand current implementation is focused on match race rather then fleet. What we are missing then is pre-start time segments (not possible to be on the line before 4 min to go, a must to cross line in reverse direction from 4 to 2 min etc.). Pre-start is a key for a match race - without such "judgements" we will have not much sense ..
More to come ..

....
4. Controls configuration - current model does not allow to fully use the options given by multi-hat/multi-buttons joysticks or complex pad's - not mentioning dedicated game pads/keyboards. While there is no separate option in configuration for sheet works or balance it's more then hard to configure such device in effective way. When we go beyond "automatic" mode simultanous work with tiller, balance and main sheet (not mentioning jib stuff) is impossible in effective way. The configuration I would like to achieve is for example :
Tiller - joystick (left/right)
View changes - hat1 + hat 3
Balance - hat 1
Main sheet - throttle
Left jib sheet - rotary 1
Right jib sheet - rotary 2
Trimming - by mouse or keyboard
Drop keels / canting - by mouse or keyboard
Clock's buttons - shortcuts to keyboard with option to build "home" key shortcuts using pad's (one button autopilot activation, work with timer etc.)
Such options could be implemented not instead but parallel to existing solution enlarging significantly ability for user customisation without need to use key-mappers delivered with joy/pad hardware. Anyway look's like that some of functions can not be currently transfered for such third party mapping tool.

More to come ..

Water - looks nice. Waves - too generic if wind dependent, user configured looks better but are more static.
