From what I could gather based on my own problem and talking to my computer-inclined buddies, it seems that the new graphics cards do not work well with old programs. There seems to be some problem with the new hardware not accepting the old DX files or even that the new dx is backwards compatible, etc.

For example, I've been told that having dx10 will cause all the old dx9 programs not to work (see the end of the last sticky).

Newer and faster are nice except for old programs.

I have 256MB card - and still have problems.

Again, a lot of programs are using DX 9.0c and a lot of old programs that use DX 8+ don't work anymore.

From what I've read here on the forum SS5 will need a good graphics card. I've been putting off buying a new computer because it seems that something new technology keeps coming out. But eventually I will have to get a new one - I had to replace my DVD burner recently and found out that the data connection has changed, so eventually I will not be able to replace any hardware as things are going!

For SS5 you will indeed need a modern graphics card. The graphics card needs to be at least a DX9.0c card with Shader Model v3.0.
All NVidia 6200 cards and higher and all ATI X1000-series and higher supports these features.
We do have to specify the exact minimum-requirements though.
