Server problems at large seem due to connection instabillity. When the server does not receive updates of boats speed and its position, the boat is halted, if there is no response or valid data for ca. 6 seconds the server will drop the connection.
The player is removed from the session. If you see some boats (not all) pause or drop out, the problem is limited to those players. If you see all boats pause, presume you are not receiving data from the server in a timely manner, if that lasts for ca. 6 seconds the game will drop the connection to the server and you drop out of the race.
Using private servers seams to be an option especially while players can be closer to the server (Australia, USA etc.) and because there will be less players on the server.
